Sauna on the beach

Sauna on the beach at Hjellup Fjordbo

At Hjellup Fjordbo you can rent a sauna on the beach right down by the Trondheimsfjord. If you want to be kind to your body and your health, regular sauna use is something that contributes greatly to this. Here with our beachfront sauna, you can combine fjord bathing and sauna, which makes the experience and health benefits even better. Below you can read more about the benefits of a sauna.

The heat in the sauna does wonders for the body. One of the physical effects is that the heart beats faster, while the blood vessels in the veins dilate, making it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body. This causes blood pressure to drop. So we can compare it to a workout, and some of the health benefits are also the same. Another effect of the heat in the sauna is that the muscles relax and become less stiff and the joints become more flexible. This reduces stress. The heat causes the body to sweat and get rid of a lot of fluid. The pores in the skin open up, and if you finish with a shower, this will have a cleansing effect on the skin. It is said that people who use saunas have finer and more radiant skin. The idea behind a beachside sauna is that these health benefits can be combined with swimming in the fjord all year round.

In Finland, the tradition of sauna (the Finnish name for sauna) goes back a long way and sauna culture is closely linked to ice bathing or bathing in cold water. Ice bathing is said to have great health benefits if done regularly. Among other things, this activity is said to strengthen the immune system and prevent lifestyle diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Ice bathing is also said to have a positive effect on mental health and mood. So there are plenty of good reasons to combine a sauna with a cold fjord bath. And when it's also possible to cool off in the wet element on our own little beach after getting warmed up in our sauna on the shore, well, there's nothing to wonder about.

Finnish researchers have conducted a great deal of research into the effects of sauna use on the body. According to this research, the health benefits appear to increase in line with the frequency of use. Among other things, the link between sauna use and mortality due to cardiovascular disease has been studied, as well as the link between sauna use and the development of dementia. The results are quite clear: The more frequently you use a sauna, the lower your chances of being affected by these diseases. So there's no reason not to visit our beachside sauna, is there?

Our beachside sauna has two rooms: a changing/relaxation room in addition to the sauna itself. The sauna can accommodate 7 people, possibly 8 who know each other well. When you rent our sauna, you have access to it for 2 hours. It is then pre-heated and ready for use. It is not recommended to sit in the heat for more than 10-15 minutes at a time, so it is important to take breaks along the way. For example, you can sit in the relaxation room, go out for a walk or take a dip in the fjord to cool down before the next session. Since the body loses a lot of fluid when you take a sauna, it's important to drink plenty of water both during and after, so it's a good idea to have a water bottle available while you're in the sauna. Our beachside sauna can either be rented by groups who want the whole sauna to themselves or you can sign up for individuals when we announce that we're firing up. The plan is to fire up at fixed times based on interest and registration. Feel free to contact us if you have suggestions for fixed times that might work.
