Tourism in Norway

Tourism in Norway has evolved from simple mountain hikes in the 19th century to modern experiences that focus on both nature and culture. The country's tourism industry grew rapidly after World War II and has been an important part of the Norwegian economy ever since.

Destinations on a Norwegian vacation

Norway's most famous attractions include the majestic fjords, the Northern Lights, the three largest cities (Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim) and many larger and smaller attractions around the country.

Norway is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. You can hike in the mountains, ski in beautiful scenery and visit museums and historical sites.

There are also many gems outside the major attractions. Norway is sparsely populated, and you'll find fantastic destinations in rural areas and along fjords. Hjellup Fjordbo is one such place. More about us below.

Norway offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to campsites. If you want to be close to nature, try staying in an iglooor lighthouse. Or maybe you'd like to try a treetop cabin.

Food in Norway

Norwegian cuisine is known for its seafood, such as fresh salmon and cod. The number of local food producers has also increased dramatically in recent years, resulting in Norwegian products of the highest world class. One example is Gangstad gårdsysteri, which won the award for the world's best cheese in 2023. Their blue cheese "Nidelven Blå" came out on top in competition with 4,500 other cheeses at the World Cheese Championships.

And this is not the first time a Norwegian cheese has been named the world's best. In 2016, the cheese "Kraftkar" received a similar award, and in 2018 Fanaosten won the award.

On a Norwegian vacation, you have the opportunity to experience flavors you've never experienced before. Tip: Talk to people where you are and get tips on the area's specialties.

Planning your Norwegian vacation

You can visit Norway all year round - whether you live in the country or come from outside. When is the best time to visit Norway? It varies, depending on your interests. Summer is perfect for hiking and exploring, while winter is ideal for experiencing the cool climate, the Northern Lights and taking part in winter activities.

Most Norwegians speak English well. If you don't speak Norwegian, it can still be useful to learn some Norwegian phrases.

The easiest way to get around the country is by car, but you'll also find good public transportation on your Norwegian holiday.

Furthermore, you should be aware that Norway is not the land of mass tourism. The country emphasizes sustainable tourism, and as a visitor you are encouraged to respect nature and support local businesses.

Norway vacation at Hjellup Fjordbo

Norway offers many romantic getaways, from remote fjord villages to luxurious mountain cabins.

Hjellup Fjordbo is one of those gems that you can come across in Norway. We are secluded and peaceful - right by the Trondheimsfjord. And it is precisely this peace and quiet that you can experience with us - along with friendly hosts and good food.

We have five spacious holiday homes, just a few meters from the water's edge. In addition, we have a very popular arctic dome (igloo), spectacularly located on a mountain shelf right by the fjord. Here you can enjoy silence, fantastic views of the Trondheimsfjord and great meals. We also have our own small restaurant/café, where you can enjoy good meals with a strong focus on local produce.

Peace and quiet doesn't mean you have to sit in a chair all day. We also have activities such as disc golf and various water activities. On the slopes above the holiday homes, you can also say hello to our friendly Boer goats. This is something that many of our guests really appreciate - not least the kids.

A vacation in Norway is more than just a trip. With its dazzling scenery, rich history and warm hospitality, Norway is a destination to be experienced.
