Leksvik - explore your next destination on Fosen

Leksvik with Kroa, photographed by Axel Lindahl in the late 1800s.

Leksvik is an idyllic little village in Indre Fosen municipality. It faces south, on the north side of the mighty Trondheimsfjord.

Today, this is in many ways a hidden little paradise, just waiting for you to discover it.

It wasn't always like this. In the first half of the last century, Leksvik was a small holiday paradise - not least for people from Trondheim and other places on the south side of the Trondheimsfjord. This was before the village had road access, so tourists came by boat from the big city and elsewhere. At that time, the village was a kind of South - only the direction was slightly north.

The picture shows parts of Kroa in Leksvik, photographed by Axel Lindahl in the late 1800s. Today it looks quite different, but much of the settlement is still right down by the fjord. And the church towers over the village, as it still does today.

The south-facing village could tempt you with beautiful sunny conditions and a varied landscape, and for the people of Trondheim the road to an exotic destination was short. The tourist traffic meant that there was room for more accommodation, with hotels and guest houses.

Today, Hjellup Fjordbo follows up on this tradition - with holiday homes and experiences by the fjord, just a few kilometers from the center of Leksvik.

Leksvik has nature made for outdoor activities

Leksvik is perfect for you if you like to be close to the fjord. The buildings stretch all the way down to the shore, and there are many opportunities for excursions along the edge of the fjord. The village is also surrounded by varied landscapes - from dense forests to moors and dramatic fjord landscapes. The Trondheimsfjord provides opportunities for great water activities, and countless hiking trails lead you up to mountain peaks with panoramic views. The inhabitants of Leksværing are also known for using nature for hiking, fishing and hunting.

Cultural experiences - for those who want them

Leksvik is not just a place for nature experiences. It's also a place where you can delve into a history that dates back to the Viking Age. Leksvik Church is a clear example of how the church was often built on "the best plot of land" in the village. The 17th-century church is made of wood and towers over the center of Leksvik. It is clearly visible from most directions.

During the year you can experience festivals, markets and art exhibitions in Leksvik.

Cramped conditions and small-scale industry

A hundred years ago, the economic base consisted largely of farming and small-scale industry such as barrel production and small sawmills. The village did not have a permanent road connection until after the mid-20th century. In the 1950s, what was then Leksvik municipality took the initiative to develop more industry, and industrialist Bjørn Lyng was among those who spearheaded this. In 1957, the company Leksvik Edelmetall was launched, and it became the start of an industrial adventure in the village.
